Don’t be fooled by the latest scams and social engineering tricks that target your personal and financial information – learn how to safeguard yourself and then tell your friends and family as well!
What is Social Engineering?
Social engineering is the art of manipulating people into giving up their confidential information. Scammers use various tactics such as phishing emails, text messages and calls to trick individuals to give up their sensitive information like passwords, account numbers or Social Security numbers.
How can you identify and protect yourself from these common scams?
Phishing emails and texts
These messages often appear to be from a trusted source, such as your financial institution, and may contain urgent or alarming requests prompting you to act quickly. Never engage with these types of messages, instead reach out to your financial institution to verify.
Phone scams
According to an article written by Truecaller, the number of spam and unwanted calls received by Americans averages out to 2.3 billion calls every month making it one of the most popular tactics scammers use to trick individuals.
These types of phone scams pretend to be representatives from a financial institution, asking for your sensitive information. Remember, financial institutions will never ask for your PIN or password over the phone.
We urge all our members to remain vigilant and proactive. Learn some ways to stay ahead of the scammers:
Always be cautious: If the person representing the company or organization is asking for your personal information, hang up the phone and call the direct number of the company.
Immediately report it: If you suspect that you’ve been targeted by a scam, report it immediately to the company and local authorities.
Educate yourself: Continuously educate yourself about new scams and techniques used by scammers to stay one step ahead. Here are some videos to learn more about recent scams:
