Nurses Week Prize Drawings: May 6-12

As National Nurses Week approaches (May 6-12) we are reminded of our local nurses’ commitment to care for our community’s health. For the tenth year in a row, we invite nurses and nursing students to enter for a chance to win a share of $2,000 in gift card prizes.

This year, three nurses will receive a $500 gift card and two nursing students will receive a $250 gift card. Nurses just need to enter to win by May 12. Know a nurse? You can enter them to win.

Slaters 50/50 Owner Andy K., Member since 2021

Andy K. has been a Clark County resident since 2006 and a CCCU member since 2021. “CCCU welcomed us with open arms in 2021 when we sought to expand our Slater's 50/50 restaurant to a second location,” he said. “After sifting through various financial institutions, one banker at CCCU stood out for his expertise and willingness to answer any questions as the project progressed - making it an easy choice!

Andy is the owner of both Slater’s 50/50 restaurants in Las Vegas, and the franchise is known for its burgers made of a blend of beef and bacon that include toppings such as onion rings, peanut butter and jelly and jalapeno bacon jam. He says, “When I'm not in the restaurants, being a dad to three energetic kids keeps me active and entertained as we explore all that our city has to offer!”

Teaching Financial Literacy at Home 

April is here which means it’s Financial Literacy month – a time to focus on financial decisions and reset your goals. Financial literacy includes many different skills and concepts that help improve financial health. It also means being confident to make wise decisions with your money.

Something we often hear is how do I get my little kids involved with money conversations? Luckily, your day-to-day tasks include financial decisions your kids can participate in as well without a lot of extra planning.

Experience is the best teacher

Teaching financial literacy can be an informal lesson for your family. Letting them experience financial tasks and issues are the best way to learn. For example, a trip to the grocery store is a perfect time for your child to get some practice regardless of their age.
Pre-K and Early Elementary School: Help them understand that everything you’re buying costs money. At check out, let your child swipe your card or hand the money over to the cashier and explain the transaction.
Elementary School: Give your child some money - you can start with $5.00. Explain to them that they can spend it however they want while showing them tradeoffs like telling them that purchasing several inexpensive items means they can’t get one more expensive item or vice versa.
High School: Occasionally, let your high school kid do the grocery shopping for you - give them your budget and grocery list. This could be at the store or online ordering as well. Let them experience what it’s like to budget the money and the best way to divide it up.
Talking about finances can be enjoyable for you and your family if you start small and make it fun. Starting this month, make it a habit to let every family member (regardless of age) get involved in handling money and discuss other financial topics within your home. After all, the goal here is to get everyone in your family comfortable and confident about finances.
