Member Since 1979: Retired Metro Crime Scene Analyst Supervisor
|
|
|
Joseph M. joined Clark County Credit Union in 1979 at a branch formerly located at Maryland and Bonanza. As a CCCU member, he enjoys how the credit union cares for its members and the staff’s ability to listen to his needs and concerns.
“I originally heard about CCCU through the police department,” said Joseph. “The department advised us about two different credit unions, and I chose CCCU because they were larger.” Now a retired crime scene analyst supervisor, he enjoys working as an independent forensic consultant. “I consult on criminal cases for attorneys, and some police departments,” he said. “I also consult in civil cases for both the plaintiff’s side and defendant’s side in disputes.” In addition to his consulting, he teaches forensic science. Joseph said, “I enjoy it and it keeps my mind sharp!”
Since joining the credit union, he has taken advantage of several products for his financial needs such as personal loans, car loans and even his home loan. Joseph said, “I like the personal nature of the credit union, and the benefits are better than banks.” Joseph has even referred his friends and family to CCCU, and said, “I tell them about the great service and that when I’ve needed loans, I was able to get one with an extremely reasonable interest rate.”
CCCU has helped Joseph reach his financial goals and dreams by working with his investments too. Joseph said, “I like this quote by Albert Einstein, ‘Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it ... he who doesn't ... pays it.’ Basically, invest as much as you can for as long as you can.”
Thank you, Joseph, for over 40 years of membership at CCCU and for all you do for our community. We are proud to have you as a part of Clark County Credit Union’s story!

Talking with Your Elders About Finances
|
|
|
May is National Older Americans Month. Although it might not be easy, it is a good time to have an important discussion about finances with your parents or other elders in your family.
Unfortunately, elder financial abuse and exploitation continues to grow. And if your parent or grandparent has a sudden health issue, you may have to make quick decisions with little or no knowledge of their financial, medical or legal information. Clark County Credit Union has four tips to make those difficult discussions a little easier: - Make time for the discussion. It can be during a family event (so everyone is present) or even a holiday. The important thing is to set a time now before it is too late.
- Get your family involved. Make sure your siblings or other important members of the family are involved so everyone can be on the same page.
- Be considerate and compassionate. This is a private and often emotional issue so express respect for the status of your parents or grandparents.
- Determine what kind of information you need. Many of us often don’t know much about the finances of our parents or other elders in our family. Among the things you should know are:
- Financial: Name of their financial institution(s). Type of accounts they may have. Life insurance policies. Mortgage company information. Retirement accounts. Accountant information. Tax returns information. Location of important papers, such as deeds.
- Legal: Name of a lawyer if they have one. Information on will, trust, and/or durable power of attorney. Funeral arrangements or wishes.
- Healthcare: Insurance policies. Long-term insurance policies to cover nursing homes or assisted living. Healthcare directives. Medical history, including prescription drugs they take.
- Expenses: A list of all monthly and annual expenses as well as income sources and how bills are paid (check or automatic bill-pay).

CCCU recently held our 70th Annual Meeting, once again done online due to current social distancing guidelines. With a quorum present, Chairman of the Board Eric Jorgenson introduced the CCCU Board of Directors and Audit Committee, who are as follows:
Board of Directors: - Debbie Conway, Vice Chair and Recorder for Clark County, Nevada
- Doug Spring, Secretary/Treasurer and Retired Director of HR Operations at UMC
- Edward Zagalo, Retired Principal Financial Analyst at Clark County
- Alise Haney, Owner at H&H Enterprises
- Michael Schramm, Director of Finance for United Health Care.
- Ted Olivas, Retired Chief of Staff, City of Las Vegas
Audit Committee: - Curtis Myles III, President and CEO, Las Vegas Monorail Company
- Marc Joseph, Retired Deputy Chief, LV Metro Police Department
- Sabrina Mercadante, Retired City Clerk, City of Henderson
- Spencer Luth, Luth & Heideman Center for Dental Care
- Steve McLean, Director of Finance, Planet 13 Holdings
In the meeting, Jorgenson said that as volunteers at one of Nevada’s oldest operating credit unions, the Board of Directors and Audit Committee are dedicated to serving the members of Clark County Credit Union. “Together, our goal is to help the people in our community have access to financial services that will help them reach their financial goals and dreams,” he said.
Matt Kershaw, CEO and President discussed that 2020 was a year that was unlike any other, filled with many ups and downs. “Our goal is to always help our members and this year, that was manifested in a variety of ways – skipped payments, waived fees, and open branches so we were available when you needed us during this challenging time.”
We saw many members respond to the pandemic by being cautious, saving stimulus checks and money from paychecks when they could. CCCU responded the same way, and we are excited to see what 2021 brings to each one of us!
